Through the Looking Glass stuff.
I am suddenly moved to talk about myself.
But not very much. I don’t really get the blogs where people talk about themselves each and every day. Their friends must have become bored enough with them to just finally tell them to shut the fuck up - and so they go on the internet in an attempt to bore the whole planet.
Global warming
Every living thing changes its environment. The more of any one kind that there are, the more the environment will be altered. Ancient cyanobacteria dumped their waste oxygen into the oceans and atmospheres, rendering them toxic to most of the then-existing forms of life.
The great herds of bison changed the environment of the Great Plains. Any large animal existing in large numbers will inevitably change its environment. Any attempt to remediate that (carbon trading, etc.) is doomed to failure. We can stop dumping toxic and radioactive crap into our oceans and atmosphere and we can have a huge local impact on cleaner air and water.
Globally, the only viable solution remains population reduction. I would guess that an effective number would be about a 90% reduction in population. The only humane way to do this is a global restriction - one child per couple (for practical reasons, this should probably be one child per woman - but this could lead to serious unintended consequences). The problem would be almost solved within a couple of generations.
However, reduced population means reduced rate of technological innovation, scientific discovery and likely loss of some existing technology. Not to mention dealing with a shrinking economy for several consecutive decades.
Or, we can buy beachfont property on Baffin Island.
