Muay Thai

Last night, my son and I went to see a Muay Thai boxing match. This is not the sort of thing I usually do, but my nephew was fighting for the Canadian welterweight championship and I felt that he should have some family support there.
I hadn’t been to a match before, so I found some of the rituals fascinating. The lower-level fighters wear helmets, chest protectors and various chin and elbow guards, so it’s a fairly low-risk sport for amateurs, although one fighter did manage to get himself a bloody nose.
However, once you’re fighting at the top levels, all of that goes away and all you have are modified boxing gloves. It’s a damned tough way to make a living and my nephew’s twin brother has a permanent knee injury as a legacy of his time in Thailand.
The upshot of the evening was that my nephew won the title (TKO in the fourth round - yay) and my son has a better understanding of the value of a higher education (I hope).
Updated photo: that’s my nephew in the black trunks losing a previous fight (split decision) against a former world champion.
